Cataratas del Iguazú: Atracción Número Uno en el mundo
「イグアスの滝」は世界一の大滝（瀑布）であり、「ビクトリアの滝」や「ナイアガラの滝」を水量、落差、迫力で凌いでいる。私たちは２００６年６月１６−１９日にイグアスの滝を訪れた。この紀行文はその時の印象をまとめたものであり、数字などは最新のブラジル国立公園の本『Cataratas do Iguaçu, EcoNatural, 2006 Brasil』などを参照にしている。
Las Cataratas del
Iguazú son las número uno en el mundo en tamaño, cantidad de agua y dinamismo,
superando a las Cataratas del Niágara y a las Cataratas de Victoria en
Zimbabwe, África del Sur. Las
visitamos desde el 16 al 19 de junio de 2006. Este relato se basa en nuestras
impresiones, en el libro más reciente del Parque Nacional Do Iguaçu （“Cataratas do Iguaçu, EcoNatural, 2006
Brasil”）, y otros .
「イグアスの滝」は三つの意味で特に魅力的である。それらは最後にまとめて明かにする。では世界遺産のイグアス国立公園を一緒に楽しむことにしよう。

Iguazú son atractivas en tres sentidos. Esto será revelado al final del relato.

基本的な情報Basic Information Información Básica
イグアス川は、ブラジルの海岸山脈から出発して西へ６９０ｋｍ流れ、やがてパラナ川に合流する。合流点[1]の手前２５ｋｍの地点にあるのがイグアスの滝。全部で大小２７５の滝からなり、大きな滝の落差は９０ｍにも及ぶ。４ｋｍにも及ぶ長い峡谷にそうのがイグアスの瀑布であり、一番奥にあるのが有名な「悪魔の喉笛（のどぶえ）」である。平均水量は毎秒１０００万リットルであり、世界のどの滝をも規模において凌ぐ。イグアス川は滝の前で流域が広がっている。広がって流れる水が突然垂直に落下する様子[2]を想像してみてください。
El Río Iguazú nace en las montañas costeras de
Brasil y fluye hacia el oeste a través de 690 km antes de confluir con el Río
Paraná. Las Cataratas del Iguazú se hallen 25 km antes de la confluencia de los
dos ríos, donde tres países (Paraguay, Brasil y Argentina) tienen sus fronteras.
Las Cataratas del Iguazú están formadas por 275 saltos grandes y pequenos y
poseen una extensión de 4 km de ancho. En lo profundo del valle se encuentra la
Garganta del Diablo.
二つの楽しみ方Two Methods f Enjoying, Dos Métodos de
Disfrutar
イグアス滝は二つの国（ブラジル、アルゼンチン）にまたがり、その楽しみ方も二つある。（１）一つ目はブラジル側から展望（パノラマ）を楽しむ方法であり、
（２）二つ目はアルゼンチン側から接近を楽しむ方法である。接近とは個々の滝の近くまで行って水しぶきを浴びながらその力強さや美しさを味わうことである。
私たちは第一日目にブラジル側から、第二日目にアルゼンチン側から、大滝を満喫した。
The
Las Cataratas del
Iguazú se encuentran entre dos países: Brasil y Argentina. Pueden disfrutarse
de dos maneras. La primera consiste en contemplar el hermoso parorama del lado
de Brasil, y la segunda es acercarse a uno de los saltos y dejarse mojar por el
vapor de agua que fluye de ellos incesantemente. Los dos métodos producen
múltiples satisfacciones. El primer día hemos disfrutado del lado de Brasil y
el segundo, del lado argentino.

最初に見えた滝がこれである。遠くに水がチョロチョロと落ちているだけである。普段なら崖いっぱいに滝が落ちている所であるが、いくら水不足とはいえこれではひどすぎる。なんだこれがイグアスの滝かと最初は失望した。
The first waterfall we saw is this. Water
is just trickling down from the cliff.
The shortage of water is so terrible that we feel disappointed. Is this really
the Greatest Waterfall in the world?
Esté es el primer salto que vimos. Lamentablemente había poca
agua. El guía dijo que normalmente
había mayor caudal. Por poco que sea agua, la escena está ahora desilusionando.
Es el salto mas grande del mundo?
そのまま谷沿いに歩いていった。半時間後に世界一大きな滝を下から見上げることになろうとは想像できなかった。
We kept on walking along the valley, never
imagining that we would come close to a greatest waterfall in the world and
admire from below.

acercaríamos al salto mayor en el mondo y admirarlo de bajo.
半時間後に遠くの谷の奥になにやら滝らしきものが見えてきた。水しぶきの大きさから滝の大きさが想像できる。期待で胸が膨らんでくる。
Half an hour later we could see far at the
deep of the valley something like a big waterfall. We could imagine how big it was judging
from a mass of water. Our hearts begin to leap with
expectation.

もうすこし進むと「魔の喉笛（のどぶえ）Garganta del Diablo」 の全景が見え始めてくる。初めの失望は増える水しぶきと共に消えていく。いよいよ大きな滝の全容が見えてくる！有名な「悪魔の喉笛」に近づくとさすが圧巻である。水煙がもうもうと立ち、虹もあちこちで見える。なんと力強く美しいんだろう。
A little forward、we
begin to see a part of the Devil’s Throat. Our initial disappointment recedes
with mounting mist. Finally, the
panorama of the Devil’s Throat is just in front of us. How overwhelming is the
waterfall! Clouds of spray are here
and there. Beautiful rainbows small and large are seen here and there. How beautiful and
powerful!
Un poco adelante,
empezamos a ver una parte de la Garganta del Diablo. Nuestra desilusión va a
desaparecer con neblina. Un gran panorama
del Garganta está ahora en la vista. ¡Qué poderoso y abrumador! Llena de vapor de agua, arco iris tan
bellos se ven acá y allá, ¡Qué
hermosa es la gran naturaleza!
望遠レンズをのぞいてみるとこんなに水流がある。遠くからでも迫力を全身で感じる。ともかくものすごい水の勢い。水不足などどこにも感じられない。
Through my telephoto lens we could see such
a mass of water. Even from the
distance we can directly feel the impact of extraordinary power of water. Nowhere is felt the shortage
of water.

poder abrumador de agua aunque estamos muy lejos. No hay falta de agua
alli.

Let’s approach more. A beautiful rainbow appears in front,
welcoming us warmly. How kind and
exquisite is Great Nature!

崖の上(写真の向かって左の上)にはかすかに人々の姿が見える(Paseo Superior)。アルゼンチン側の展望台だ。明日はそこに行く。
On the cliff in the distance(Paseo Superior) we see a number of persons who look around
from the viewpoint of the Argentine Side.
We
will go there tomorrow.

イグアス川に設置された遊歩道は終点の「魔の喉笛」まで約１ｋｍある。水量が多い時にはボートによるエコツアーができるが、今は水量が少なく浅瀬が多い。その浅瀬ではワニや亀や小魚などを眼下に見ることができた。遊歩道の終点に近づくとやがてもうもうたる水煙が崖の向こうに見えてくる。
The walkway over the very wide

del Diablo. Es posible disfrutar
“Eco’Tour” cuando hay mucha agua.
Ahora hay poca agua y es posible ver vados aca y allí. Abajo sobre el vado podemos obserbar
animales come un cocodrilo, una tortuga, pájaros, mariposas y un montón de
peces. Llegamos a ver una nube de
agua levantandose más allá del precipio.

está pasando?
いよいよものすごい滝の一部が見え始めた。
Finally, the magnificent waterfall begins
to appear in front of us.

magnífico salto empieza a aparecer en frente de nosotros.
とうとう悪魔の喉笛（のどぶえ）に着く。 ここは滝の上の遊歩道の終点にある展望台。
昨日ブラジル側から見えたのはこの展望台であった。
We arrive at the Devil’s Throat at last. Here
is the viewpoint at the end of the walkway. We saw this viewpoint above in
the distance.

Este mirador está al final del Paseo Superior. Es el que vimos del Lado Argentino el
día anterior.
耳をつんざく騒音、舞い上がる水煙、大地を震わす地響き。圧倒的な迫力に誰もがどきもを抜かれる。白い水がまぶしい。滝の水が白く見えるのは、水に大量の空気が混ざり、太陽光が乱反射しているからである。一般に、物体が白く見えるのは太陽光の乱反射の結果である。 Stunning sound, dancing spray, and rumbling of the ground astonish
every visitor. We are struck dumb by the overwhelming magnificent force of the
cataracts. White water
is sparkling in the sun. Ensordecimiento, rocios de agua, y sonidos
retumbantes asombran a todos visitantes.
Somos dejado estupefacto por la fuerza magnifica de las Cataratas. Agua
muy blanca está brillando al sol.
妻はおそるおそる展望台の欄干に手を置くのがやっとだった。崖っぷちなので、びくびくしながら写真におさまった。
Very timidly she touched the handrail of
the viewpoint right at the cliff, venturing to assume a pose for a moment.

sientiendose asustada.
驚きが恐れに変わり、恐怖感がつのる。足の裏から地響きが直に伝わってくる。「悪魔の喉笛」の真横の崖に立つと、誰でも恐怖を感じてしまう。それほどの畏怖の念が水とともに全身を襲う。写真の所々がぼやけているのは水滴のせい。カメラのレンズには水滴がいっぱい。地響きの音を再現できないのは残念。
The initial surprise changes into fear. From
below the foot we feel the rumble of the earth without interruption. The
Devil’s Throat makes everyone feel scared without exception. Such fear and
terror covers our entire body which is very wet with heavy water vapor. There
are many drops of water on the lens of the camera. This is why you see some dim
spots all over the photo. It is a pity not to be able to reproduce the rumbling
sound here on the homepage.
La primer sorpresa
se convierte en temor. Siempre sentimos un temblor terrible desde abajo. La
Garganta del Diablo infunde terror a cada uno sin excepcion que está de pie
aca. El rocio de agua está azotándonos incesamente. El terror cubre nuestro
cuerpo entero. En la foto se ven muchos puntos borrosos por que hay muchas
gotas de agua sobre la lente de la camara. Es una lástima no poder reproducir
el sonido retumbante.
水煙がものすごくて、底は見えない。崖っぷちに立っているのがやっとであり、滝つぼを長く見続けることはできない。
Rising tremendous vapors of water prevent us from seeing the bottom of
the valley. It is impossible keep looking at the bottom
long enough because of the terror which keeps attacking us.
El inmenso vapor de
agua impide que sigamos viendo el fond del valle. Es imposible asomarse sobre la
barandilla del mirador y mirar abajo al fondo unos minutos. ¡Qué pavoroso es estar de pie acá justo
al acantilado!
９０メートル落下する大量の水と猛烈なごう音に見ているものは誰でも打ちのめされる。早々と引き上げる。華厳の滝にはないすごさがここにある。水量の少ない時でさえこうなら、水量の多い時期にはどんなものか想像さえできない。
We cannot keep looking down long enough. The bottom is 90 meters deep.
The impulse and sound of falling tremendous amount of water is truly
overwhelming. Everybody leaves the place soon. Here is the fear not to be
experienced by the Kegon Waterfall in

対照的な虹と蝶の美しさ, Contrasting beauty of rainbows and butterflies, Belleza opuesta de arcos iris y

滝とは反対の側を見ると、そこには綺麗な虹があり、小さい蝶が舞う。空は七色に輝き、美を謳歌している。「ほらあそこに綺麗な虹がでているよ」、「えー、どこ？」と探しているうちに消えていくはかない美しさ。小さな虹や大きな虹があちこちで現れてはすぐ消えていく。まるで虹の舞いを見ているようだ。はかない小さな彩りは心を和ませ、瀑布とは対照的な優しさで訪れる者を歓迎する。「虹の舞う イグアス瀑布 冬なごむ」
On the other side of the Waterfall we see
beautiful rainbows and butterflies here and there adding many colors to the
natural beauty. “There, we see a
rainbow!” “Where is it?” The
rainbow disappears while looking for it. How transient is its beauty! Many pretty rainbows appear and
disappear in many places. It looks
as if we were enjoying “dancing rainbows”.

las cataratas se ven un arco iris y unas mariposas muy lindas. El cielo está
ensalzando la belleza de la gran naturaleza. “Allí, hay un arco iris!” “¿Donde está?” Mientras buscaba, desapareció. El arco iris dura sólo entre uno y dos minutos. ¡Qué
pasajera es esta belleza! Muchas arco iris aparacen y desaparecen en diversas
partes y a diversas alturas. Parece
como que estén bailando.

Many colorful butterflies are dancing in
the air. How refined is the beauty of nature!

同期のＳＶ（小堀さん）と会ったので、昼食を共にしながら歓談した。彼は、ボートに乗って滝の下まで行ったそうである。曰く、「濡れるなんてもんじゃない。バケツの水を頭からかけられたようだった。下着までびしょぬれになった。」
We happened to meet with Mr. Kobori, another Senior Volunteer of JICA. We took lunch
together and enjoyed conversation with the old friend. He rode a boat and broke into the canyon
of the waterfall, saying “We were thoroughly drenched to the skin. It looked as
if buckets of water. “
Nos tropezamos con
Sr. Kobori, otro Voluntario Senior del JICA. Nos divertimos en la
conversacion con el viejo amigo. Se empapó totalmente, como si cubos de agua
hubiera sido vertido sobre nuestra
cabeza.
亜熱帯のジャングルの中の散歩は本当に気持ちがよい。亜熱帯の鳥（トゥカン（ｔｕｃａｎ））を３回も見たし、珍しい花や植物も沢山見ることができた。猿も見かけた。黒とオレンジの蝶も飛んでいた。カラフルな蛇が目の前を横切ることもある。散歩道には竹林もあった（写真）。
A stroll in the
subtropical jungle is really refreshing. We see pretty flowers and fantastic plants
as well as see subtropical birds (e.g. tucan). We
could also see monkeys and butterflies colored black and orange. A walkway passes through
bamboo bushes.
Una vuelta a través de la selva
subtropical nos refresca. Vemos tanto flores y plantas muy lindas como aves
subtropicales (e.g. tucán). Vimos manos y mariposas de colores negros
y narannja. Una serpiente llena de
colores cruza justo en frente. Hay bambúes en una
parte del Paseo Superior.

独特の実をつけた珍しい木。名前は周りの人に聞いても分からない。
Here is a tree with peculiar fruits. Nobody
around knows the name of the strange tree. No sé cómo se llama este árbol
con frutos distintos.
グアラナニー族(パラグアイ)の子供たちが昔からの音楽で歓迎Ａ（出口）。 Children of the Gurranies
of Paraguay welcome us with the traditional music at the exit. ¡Qué lindos son los
jovenes de los Guaraníes de Paraguay!

「イグアスの滝」は三つの意味で特に魅力的である。The Iguazu Falls are attractive in three senses. Las Cataratas
（１）U字型の谷の最も奥に一番の見せ所を隠す。ブラジル側から出発するとこういう感じを強くする。そういう特異な地形は太古の大陸移動の時期（南米大陸誕生の時期）にさかのぼると言われる。
The
Las Cataratas del
Iguazú ocultan su mayor atracción al fondo del valle muy largo. Así se siente
cuando el viaje empieza del lado de Brasil. Dicen que la disposición del
terreno muy distinto fue causado mucho antes durante la separación del
Continente Suramericano del Continente Australiano.
（２）失望から驚き・恐れへの転換, Change from disappointment to surprise and
fear, Cambio de desilusión en sorpresa y mied
ブラジル側から出発すると最初に「なんだこんなものか」と見る人をがっかりさせ、次に奥に引き込んで驚かせ度肝を抜かせる。油断していると最後のきばに驚く。見る人の気持ちに大きな落差を生じさせるあたり、本当に興味深く、奥が深いと言えないだろうか。
A visitor who starts from the Brazilian side
tends to be disappointed at first, but later on gets surprised greatly. This big change in human feelings seems
to be prepared in advance. How interesting and deep is the

¡Qué interesante y profunda es la obra de la Gran Naturaleza en atracciones!
（３）コントラストに富む大自然、Nature full of
contrasts, Naturaleza lleno de contrastes.
イグアスは驚くほどのコントラストで満ちている。大（瀑布）から小（蝶）までさまざまな美と驚きを秘めたイグアスはなんと豊かなんだろう。かわいい美しさと連なる大滝の力強さを見事にかねそなえたのがイグアスである。こういう魅力はナイアガラの滝やビクトリアの滝にはない。ミクロとマクロの素晴らしさを共に秘め奥に引きずり込んで驚かす。イグアスは奥が深く魅力がつきない。
Iguazu is full of natural contrasts. Abundant are
its surprises from the big (Cataratas) to the small
(butterfly). Concealed in it are its beauties, the discovery of which brings
new pleasant surprise. Such attractions are not existent in the
Las Cataratas del Iguazú están llenas de
contrastes naturales. Abundante son sus sorpresas tanto de cosas grandes
(Cataratas) como de cosas pequeños (mariposa). Estas atracciones no existen en
las Cataratas de Niagara y las Cataratas de Victoria. Ocultas están muchas bellezas, el descrubrimiento de las cuales dan nueva
sorpresa de gozo. Muy profundas y atractivas las Cataratas del Iguazú
自然保護とジャイカ, Nature Conservation and JICA,
Conservación de Naturaleza y JICA
イグアスの滝は、８０％がアルゼンチン側に、２０％がブラジル側に属する。アルゼンチンの方がより魅力的であり、イグアスの滝は世界に誇るアルゼンチンの自然遺産である。付近一帯は両国とも国立公園として保護され、野生の大自然は大切にされている。自然保護地域には、２０００種類以上の植物、４００種類以上の鳥と多くの動物が生きており、その生物多様性は世界自然遺産の名にふさわしい。このことは突然の訪問客も感じることである。天地創造の奥深さと素晴らしさのほんの一部を垣間見る感じである。そういう 豊かな国立公園の自然環境の保護にジャイカも参加している。基礎的な環境データの整備、学校の生徒を対象にした環境保全教育などは地元の政府からも高く評価されている。嬉しいことである。

of the Iguazu Falls belongs to Argentina, while 20 % to Brazil. The Argentine Side
contains more interesting spots.
El 80% de las Cataratas del Iguazú pertenecen a
Argentina, y el 20% a Brasil. El
lado Argentino contiene lugares más interesantes que el lado Brasileño. Las Cataratas del Iguazú son una de las
mayor atracciones de las que Argentina está orgullosa. El área de Iguazú tiene
más de 2000 tipos de plantas, 400 tipos de aves y un montón de animales. La
biodiversidad abundante merece el título Patrimonio Natural de la Humanidad, lo
que visitantes casuales pueden sentir.
Es bueno que la JICA (Agencia de Cooperación Internacional del Japón)
esté participando en la conservación del ambiente natural en el área de Iguazú. La producción de los materiales
informativos para las comunidades locales y de los materiales de enseñanza para
la educación del ambiente a los alumnos, etc. son muy apreciados por los
gobiernos locales.

付録１： 名前の由来
イグアスの滝は、ブラジルでは Cataratas do Iguaçu と言い、アルゼンチンでは Cataratas de Iguazú と言う。そもそも cataratas（カタラタス）とは
catarata（カタラタ、大きな滝、瀑布）の複数であり、イグアスには大小全部で２７５の滝（salto de agua）がある。イグアスとは先住民の言葉で「大いなる水」を意味する。En idioma guaraní
la palabra igu-azú significa “agua grande” (igu=agua, azú=grande).
付録２： 深い谷が４キロにわたってなぜできたか・・・その創造は太古の大陸移動（南米大陸の誕生）にさかのぼる
特異の地形はどうしてできたか。ブラジル国立公園の入り口の説明によると、大昔の大陸移動の時にさかのぼる。オーストラリア大陸から南米大陸が分離した頃にイグアスの滝が出来たと言われる。川底の岩盤が突然陥没したらどうなるだろうか。８０メートルも落ちた岩盤が深い峡谷を造った。イグアス川は流域が広く、広い流域から大量の水が真下に落ちる。そういう陥没地帯が延々と４キロメートルも続く。８０メートル落下した水があちこちで大量の水煙を高く舞い上げる。そういう水煙は数キロ先からも見えるが、これは太古の昔から一秒も休むことなく続いてきた。まさに驚異である。そういう大陸地殻変動の歴史を今に示すのはイグアスの滝である。

蝶も舞う イグアス瀑布 冬豊か 水しぶきや虹はもちろん蝶も舞う自然豊かな国立公園のなかにイグアスの大滝（瀑布）はある。日本の滝でも冬に虹が見えることはあるが、蝶までは見えない。従ってイグアスは温帯ではなく亜熱帯にある。亜熱帯であるので真冬でも、真夏ほどではないが、暑い。 瀑布という語が示すように、水量はいつでも豊かで、イグアスでは世界一のごう音が毎秒とどろいている。そこに冬でもきれいな小さな喋喋がたくさん舞っていて、青空に映える。虹も沢山見え、大小さまざまの虹があちこちに出ては消えて、まるで虹が舞っているようだ。心が和む。滝の周りの自然にはきれいな花、カラフルな鳥や珍しい植物も沢山あって本当に楽しい。自然はなんと豊かで奥が深いのだろう。うれしいことにそういう豊かな自然環境の保護に協力する機会をジャイカは与えられている。 圧倒的な水の迫力と心和む蝶の華麗な姿、すさまじいごう音と繊細な色のハーモニー、男性的な力強さと女性的な優しさ、がここにある。絶妙な巧みさをこめた大自然はいったいどのようにして存在するようになったのだろうか。偶然にそうなったのだろうか。意図的に創造されたのだろうか。偉大な大自然のふところに抱かれ、畏怖の念が全身を貫ぬいていた。びしょぬれになりながら体感した大自然の豊かな奥深さが一生忘れられない。 （なおこの俳句は「俳句ギャラリー」に入選した作品です） |
